ISLAM -- The Most Controversial
Topic In The World today

Dr. Carl Goldberg, Ph.D.

First of all, I would like to thank the leaders of the ASU College Republicans United for organizing this unique and important event; and I would like to recognize the courage on the part of the leaders of the Muslim Students Association to share the stage with a knowledgeable infidel.

So, welcome to the most sensitive and controversial topic in the world – Islam. Judging by the size of the crowd this evening, there is something about Islam, as opposed to other religions, which concerns many non-Moslems. If this event had been about Lutheranism, or Buddhism or Hinduism, we would probably not fill more than the front two rows.

What is it about Islam that concerns so many people? Is Islam a religion of peace, as the Moslem community spokesmen say? Or, is Islam a religion of war against unbelievers, and a threat to our western civilization, as many non-Moslems suspect? Tonight, we are going to learn how the most respected Islamic religious authorities answer that question about their own religion.

I hope that everyone here will follow Imam Anas Hlayhel’s admonition that It's an Islamic imperative that when we look at a person, we look at everything and not just focus on the bad. If we're trying to understand someone's position, we listen to their whole message.“   Please, follow the imam’s advice and listen to the whole message.

Second, -- and I need to stress this so that everyone gets it -- what you hear from me this evening about Islam is NOT my personal opinion because my personal opinion is irrelevant. This discussion is not about me. Everything I say about Islam comes straight from the Islamic sources which are highly recognized and respected in the Islamic world. The Islamic religious authorities whom I cite have devoted their whole lives to studying Islam, and they know Islam far better than ANY person in this room. Therefore, if you don’t agree with what you hear, your argument is with those respected Islamic sources, not with me.

Third, if much of what you hear about Islam this evening sounds negative to you, that is because your Western Judeo-Christian values are fundamentally different from Islamic values. The Islamic religious authorities whom I cite consider it all positive because their values are Islamic values, based on the Koran which they consider to be their god’s literal word.

Fourth, because the question of the nature of Islam is so sensitive and controversial, we need to be extremely careful about where we turn for the truth. There are only four reliable sources for the truth about Islam, and they do NOT include Moslem spokesmen or your personal Moslem acquaintances. Those four sources are:

1) The Koran, which all Moslems believe is the literal word of their god, Allah, and which, according to Islamic religious leaders, “… contains all knowledge from science to economics to politics.” If you would like to verify  any passage in the Koran, one of the best websites is the Islamic website, “Islam Awakened”, which has over thirty searchable parallel English translations.

2) The second source of the truth about Islam is the collection of sacred sayings of the Moslem prophet, Muhammad, often referred to as the Sunnah or the hadiths.

3) The third source for the truth about Islam is sharia law. Here is the most popular manual of Sharia law, Reliance of the Traveller, which is used in American mosques and is approved by the highest Islamic religious authorities of Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and America.

4) Finally, there are the writings of the most respected Islamic religious authorities for the past 1300 years.

All of those four sources of the truth about Islam are available in English translation approved by the Islamic religious authorities.

Let me say up front that I am not concerned with the theology or the ritual practices of Islam. I, like other non-Moslems, am concerned about how Islam views us unbelievers. I am concerned that Islam wants to impose its totalitarian sharia law on our society and the world.

As you will see in the next few minutes, the Islamic religious authorities define Islam as an ideology for the entire world, not just for Moslems.

In order to understand Islam, the belief system, we need to understand its internal logic. The fundamental premise of Islam, from which everything else about Islam flows, is that ALL Moslems consider the Koran to be the literal, direct word of their god, Allah – perfect, unchangeable and valid for all of eternity. As such, no Moslem believer can change anything in the Koran, let alone reject it. In fact, any Moslem who attempts to do so is considered an apostate subject to the death penalty under sharia law.

This means that whatever is in the Koran, everyone – Moslems and non-Moslems – is stuck with forever. A logical consequence of considering the Koran to be the literal word of Allah is that Islam can never be reformed. Because the Koran is considered perfect, the very notion of reform is logically absurd. Another logical consequence, is that there is no such thing as “radical Islam” or “moderate Islam”, because there is no such thing as a “radical Koran” or a “moderate Koran”.

Just the other day at the United Nations, Imran Khan, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, said: There is no radical Islam. There is only one Islam.” This concept was best expressed by one of the most important leaders of the Islamic world today, Turkish President Erdogan, who said: Islam cannot be classified as moderate or not…These descriptions are very ugly, it is offensive and an insult to our religion. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam. Islam is Islam and that’s it.”

Next, In order to understand Islam, we must make the logical distinction between Islam, the belief system, and Muslims, the people. Islam is the belief system based on the Koran and the sacred sayings of Muhammad. THAT is Islam.  Those two sacred texts form the basis of Sharia law, which is considered to be Allah’s law, mandatory for all of humanity. MOSLEMS, on the other hand, are people who identify with Islam and the Islamic community but who do not necessarily know about the political nature of Islam and who do not necessarily follow Islam in the same way or to the same degree. For example, many American Moslems do not even go to mosque – a serious violation of Sharia law. Moslems can vary from very strict observance of sharia law to very lax observance of sharia law. There are also many secular Moslems-in-name-only; and there are Moslems who are still part of the worldwide Moslem community but who are on the verge of leaving Islam and becoming ex-Moslems, which is a crime punishable by death under sharia law. The death penalty for apostasy, as well as many other cruel punishments for violating sharia law are enforced in those areas where the Islamic religious authorities exercise political power, for example, in the areas controlled by ISIS, Al Qaeda, Al Shabab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria, and also in Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. In the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, many people have been sitting for years on death row in prison because of “blasphemy”. In the West where the Moslem communities are too weak to enforce sharia law, we see organizations of ex-Moslems. Therefore, always distinguish between Islam as a belief system and Moslems who practice Islam in different ways around the world; and remember, Sharia law will be enforced when the Islamic religious leaders have the political power to enforce it.

And, now to the heart of tonight’s discussion: How is Islam different from all other religions? The main difference is that Islamic sacred law, Sharia, covers all aspects of human life. Here again, is the most popular English manual of Sunni sharia law, approved as a guide for Sunni Moslems today by the highest Islamic religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and America.    This manual is used in American mosques. It is promoted by the Islamic Society of North America, the largest Islamic organization in America. To illustrate just how deeply Sharia law controls human behavior, here are just a few examples from this 1400-page manual:

---------à       mosque attendance; apostasy; homosexuals; lying; using the toilet; music; cards and chess.

Now, let us turn to the respected Islamic religious authorities who tell us that Islam is a complete way of life, a complete code of life and a “comprehensive ideology”.  Because Islam is a “complete way of life”, Islam calls for a theocracy with no separation between religion and state. This means that whatever is a sin in Islam becomes a punishable crime.

Here is what the Islamic sources tell us about Islam as a totalitarian ideology:

The Islamic ISLAMICITY website says:

Every action of the pious Muslim, therefore, is determined by the Quran, by precedents set by the Prophet, and by the practice of the early community of Islam as enshrined in the shari'ah.

To a degree almost incomprehensible in the West it shapes and colors broadly, specifically, and totally the thoughts, emotions, and values of the devout Muslim's life from birth to death.

Yusuf Qaradawi: Islam is a Complete Way of Life

Islam is not a religion in the common, distorted meaning of the word, confining its scope only to the private life of man. By saying that it is a complete way of life, we mean that it caters for all the fields of human existence. In fact, Islam provides guidance for all walks of life – individual and social, material and moral, economic and political, legal and cultural, national and international.”

A Complete Code of Life

Reference: The Need for Islam by Dr.Muhammad Al Alkhuli

Islam is a religion, but not in the western meaning of religion. The western connotation of the term "religion" is something between the believer and God. Islam as a religion organizes all aspects of life on both the individual and national levels. Islam organizes your relations with God, with yourself, with your children, with your relatives, with your neighbor, with your guest, and with other brethren. Islam clearly establishes your duties and rights in all those relationships. Islam establishes a clear system of worship, civil rights, laws of marriage and divorce, laws of inheritance, code of behavior, what not to drink, what to wear, and what not to wear, how to worship God, how to govern, the laws of war and peace, when to go to war, when to make peace, the law of economics, and the laws of buying and selling. Islam is a complete code of life.

Islam as an Ideology

In sharp contrast to Christianity, Judaism, and other religions, Islam is not merely a religion. Rather, Islam is a unique and comprehensive ideology.

was an Iraqi scholar of Islamic law of international renown. In his book War and Peace in the Law of Islam, was published in 1955.

“Hence the divine law revealed to the Prophet Muhammad as a set of all-embracing commands is both authoritarian and totalitarian in nature.

The goal of Islam is to establish a worldwide Caliphate, or Islamic empire. This same goal is shared by ISIS, Al Qaeda, The Muslim Brotherhood and all its front groups, and, in general by the Islamic religious establishment. This means that Islam is also an imperialist ideology. Here is what the Islamic sources have to say about that.

Many verses in the KORAN call for war against non-Moslems.

Here is one of them:

-- Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God’s religion shall reign supreme. 8:40

Mohammed said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, "None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24

Muhammad said: “I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify to the fact that there is no god but Allah, and believe in me (that) I am the Messenger and in all that I have brought.”

-- JIHAD means to (make) war on non-Muslims. (o9.0)

-- 'The Caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians ... until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax…” (o9.8)

--  The Caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslims. (o9.9)

Ibn Khaldun

(d. 1406) - jurist, renowned philosopher, historian, and sociologist:

"In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the [Muslim] mission and [the obligation to] convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force .... Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations."

Dr. Muhammad Sa'id Ramadan al-Buti

Egyptian scholar from AI-Azhar university.

"The Holy War (Islamic Jihad), as it is known in Islamic Jurisprudence, is basically an offensive war…. Its goal is the exaltation of the Word of Allah and the construction of Islamic society and the establishment of Allah's Kingdom on Earth regardless of the means.

                                                   Abul Maududi

"Islam wishes to destroy all States and Governments anywhere on the face of the earth which are opposed to the ideology and programme of Islam…”

“The purpose of Islam is to set up a State on the basis of its own ideology and programme, ...”

“Islam is a revolutionary ideology and programme which seeks to alter the social order of the whole world and rebuild it in conformity with its own tenets and ideals.”  (Jihad in Islam, p. 8)

Seyyid Qutb

"The reason for jihad ... is to establish God's authority in the earth .... "

"Jihad in Islam is simply a name for striving to make this system of life dominant in the world."

Muzammil Siddiqi

Chairman of both the Sharia Law Council of North America and the North American Islamic Trust:

"As Muslims, we should participate in the system to safeguard our interests and try to bring gradual change, (but) we must not forget that Allah's rules have to be established in all lands, and all our efforts should lead to that direction."

Majid Khadduri

Iraqi–born academic internationally recognized as a leading authority on a wide variety of Islamic subjects, modern history and the politics of the Middle East. His book War and Peace in the Law of Islam, was published in 1955.

“The Islamic state, whose principal function was to put God's law into practice, sought to establish Islam as the dominant reigning ideology over the entire world....The jihad was therefore employed as an instrument for both the universalization of religion and the establishment of an imperial world state.”

An Ideological Army

In the formation and equipping of the country’s defense forces, due attention must be paid to faith and ideology as the basic criteria. Accordingly, the army of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps are to be organized in conformity with this goal, and they will be responsible not only for guarding and preserving the frontiers of the country but also for fulfilling the ideological mission of jihad in God’s way; that is, extending the sovereignty of God’s law throughout the world (this is in accordance with the Koranic verse “Prepare against them whatever force you are able to muster, and strings of horses, striking fear into the enemy of God and your enemy, and others besides them.” [8.60])

If we had more time, we would discuss the important questions of human rights in Islam, the impossibility of gender equality in Islam, homophobia, anti-semitism and persecution of Christians in the Moslem world – all because of sacred Islamic doctrines in the Koran and Muhammad’s Sunnah. We would also discuss the Muslim Brotherhood and its subversive stealth jihad against America and the Islamic war against Israel. For this evening, however, just keep in mind that the Islamic religious authorities tell us that Islam is not merely a religion but also a totalitarian and imperialist ideology which they will impose on us when they have the power to do so.  Let me finish with four quotes from respected Islamic leaders:

Islam came to be followed, not to follow. To be dominant, not subordinate.

HASAN AL-BANNA founder of The Muslim Brotherhood:

"It is the nature of Islam to dominate, not to be dominated, to impose its law on all nations and to extend its power to the entire planet."

OMAR AHMAD, co-founder and long-time Board chairman of the Hamas-terrorist-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations:

"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Quran should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth." San Ramon Valley Herald, July 4, 1998.

ABUL MAUDUDI    "The goal of Islam is to rule the entire world and submit all of mankind to the faith of Islam. Any nation or power that gets in the way of that goal, Islam will fight and destroy."
